Totality of media - environment it"s made in, how it"s made: media is a result of the society its being created in and for. Communication: all the ways we interact with each other and the world around us. Implicit and explicit, verbal non-verbal, individual and group, simple and complex. Interaction - to interact there is something communicated. Signals messages and codes (traffic lights communicate with us: necessity of com in society, com is fundamental to relationships. Communication is not always successful: conflict and misinformation. "only hear what i want to hear" - if com isnt working it creates an issue on canadian society bc goal of broadcasting policy is to create canadian sense and its failing. Culture: set of shared values, ideas, traditions, beliefs, ideologies that make a group unique. "character" of particular group or place - intangible feeling or recognition: religion, ethnocoty, generation.
