The earliest written texts are from about 700bc. A society that exists without writing is an oral society. The majority of information in this society are done by word of mouth. Oral is the dominate tradition in this society. Writing is very must embedded in the oral culture. Most writing systems prior to the greek did not represent speech. The alphabet system we use is meant to represent speech. Words we are speaking are composited of the words. The development of writing is the development of a process of analysis of sound. Things that were already being spoken were transcribed into writing. A lot of the people who did the copying were e-literate. The introduction of writing meant that now you have a fixed text this is in fact the illiate. Once the fixed text comes into being, the whole process of writing it is transformed.
