Second wave feminism- gendering the suburbs: second wave feminism, three main concerns with respect to the media. Stereotypical portrayals of women: women should be in the kitchen, housewives, weak, shrew wife, women as sex objects. Meant to be an oasis for men/women: dream to return home from work to a perfect home, living the american dream, it was all a sham, however. Not prepared to take up anti-septic life selling tvs, etc: living a boring life had no meaning. Women dissatisfied with lives in the suburbs: american women felt alienated and unhappy, despite marriage and motherhood, cultural pressures, friedan interviewed women at her high school reunion. All married with kids, but unhappy despite being financially and materially comfortable. Her research started as an article, turned into an expanded study, it was a lot of american women, not just those at her reunion.
