Excludability: the property of a good whereby a person can be prevented from using it. Ex: iphones (you must pay their price or not get it) Rival in consumpion: property of a good where one person"s use diminishes other people"s use. Four categories of goods: private goods: both excludable and rival in consumpion, public goods: neither excludable nor rival in consumpion, common resources: rival in consumpion but not excludable, club goods: excludable but not rival in consumpion. Free rider: a person who receives the beneit of a good but avoids paying for it. Because of this the market fails to produce an eicient outcome. Some important public goods: naional defense (all ciizens have this by right, basic research: general knowledge is a public good and speciic technological is not, fighing poverty. Knowing the government has a role to play in the provision of public goods is the irst step.
