Document Summary

Rate of population increase= percentage yearly net increase in pop size due to natural increase and net international migration. Natural increase measures the excess of births over deaths. Most developing countries have birth rates from 15-40 per 1,000 -most developed countries have birth rates less than 15 per 1000. Birth rates and death rates are normally expressed as numbers per thousand of the pop. Rate: (fertility rate)- number of births per thousand of population per year. Death rate: (mortality rate)- number of deaths per thousand of pop. Per year population growth rate= birth rate-death rate. Tfr, life expectancy at birth and under-5 mortality rate: Young populations are biased toward low death rates and this is true even if age specific death rates are high. High rates of population growth lead to a younger population and then to high birth rates and low death rates. This creates an echo effect that keeps the population growth rate high.
