GG101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ionosphere, Smog, Thermosphere
Document Summary
Colder air in the troposphere and warmer air in the stratosphere. Mesosphere and thermosphere: not important but the final two layers of the atmosphere. Function: above the troposphere, there is the ionosphere and ozonosphere, ionosphere absorbs the gamma and x-ray radiation, ozonosphere (stratosphere) absorbs uv radiation. In the current times, we have reduced our coal consumption because it is pollution driven. Ex, turned bodies of water into acidic and impacted crops: stratospheric ozone depletion. Cfc was a gas used in fridges and such. When they escape and get into the stratosphere (ex, cfc escaping fridge in a landfill), it would break apart the ozone in the atmosphere: smog (air pollution). *number of smog days have gotten smaller* - correlates with the fact that coal- burning factories are getting shut down. Energy balance of the earth: radiation and matter interactions, albedo, heat, energy balance, greenhouse effect.
