GG102 Lecture 8: GG102 lesson 8
Document Summary
Gg102 lesson 8: most economic decisions are made, most creation of economic value (i. e. , production) takes place, most political decisions are made, most physical infrastructure is located, most capital is concentrated. Even within a given type of region (core, peripheral, or semi-peripheral), we can usually find examples of other categories. For example, there are pockets of wealth in semi-peripheral regions (e. g. , the muskokas in ontario"s near north); and poor (i. e. , peripheral) neighbourhoods in rich (i. e. , core) cities. When we add up these examples, we realize that the modern world-system consists of a nested set of cores and peripheries that range from the global to the regional to the local level (see. Figure 2. 2 on p. 57 of the textbook). In the general introduction to the modules and in module 1, we tried to relate the ideas of place and globalization to our own lives to make these concepts more meaningful to us.
