GG231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Geochemistry, Epicenter, Convergent Boundary
Document Summary
It is necessary to understand these things in order to reduce the extent of these events. Some other things we must understand include the distribution of the hazard, the impacts and vulnerability of the people and place, prediction of future events and finally how we can adjust our structures, behaviour and policies. The main processes that initiate earthquakes and cause the damage are related to sites where there is rupture and movement of rocks, often along a fault. Once it is created the force of the earthquake moves through the earth by seismic waves. The physical aspects of an earthquake are linked to factors such as where did the earthquake originate or at what depth below the earth"s surface, the structure of the bedrock, etc. Faults - large masses of rock or lithospheric plates move against, away or along contact zones.
