Document Summary

One tw = 1 million megawatts or one trillion watts. Sensible heat: can be sensed or measured by something. Latent heat: heat that is either absorbed or released when a substance changes phase heat transfer. Conduction: transfer of heat through a substance by means of atoms and molecular interactions. Convection: transfer of heat through movement of fluid. For example, water at the bottom pot warms and rises upwards displacing the cooler water at the surface. Radiation: wave like energy emitted by a substance that possesses heat. This occurs by oscillations in electric and magnetic fields, thus the waves are called electromagnetic waves. Earths energy is balanced between incoming and outgoing energy. Solar energy drives the hydrologic cycle, ocean waves and currents and global atmospheric circulation. Much of the energy emitted by the sun is electromagnetic energy. Electromagnetic energy with wave lengths greater than 1 m includes radio and microwaves.
