This is also the year he becomes a member of the socialist party. 1914 he begins writing for il grido del popolo. 1917 government puts down a popular uprising in turin, killing fifty people and imprisoning key labour leaders and left intellectuals, including maria giudice, the editor in chief of il grido del popolo. 1917-18 gramsci continues to write, while also becoming secretary of the socialist party.
