The greek defenders: by the 5th century they had a unique style of warfare, fought as heavily armoured infantry (hoplite) The hoplite soldier was named after his shield, the hoplon. It was constructed from wood and covered with a thin sheet of bronze, total weight was around 16 pounds, strapped to the left arm. It was three feet in diameter with a pronounced dish shape: the greek soldier wore a full suit of body armour. The corinthian helmet was the most common headgear in the 5th century. 4 key characteristics: greek warfare was simple and straightforward, the phalanx didn"t require prolonged training. Greek city states required all citizens to fight in their defense a condition of political participation. The first phase of battle is the phalanx collision. The opposing phalanxes charged together, the moment of impact was the deadliest. The front rank could use momentum to deal fatal blows or topple their opponents.
