Document Summary

Inter-war years represent a landmark in how sport was configured. Sport in the uk and na was not as overtly political as in other regions: no national official policy, nor governing bodies. More authoritarian states (italy and germany) used ideology to manage sports. By the end of the 19th century, international matches had become more common. Development of the sporting calendar : impacted the relationship between sport and politics. In all sports, the numbers of competing countries doubled between the 1900s and. 1920s and did so again between the 1920s and 1950s. As sports become more international, governments began to monitor. In 1920, the british foreign office created a unique index for sporting files. Many nations asked the british government for information about the structure and organization of sport. After 1918, governments accepted the idea that sport had a role to play in cultural competition between nations. Britain, as the first sporting nation, became subject to intense competition.
