Document Summary

Process by which meaning is attached to sensory information. Two approaches for explaining the nature of perception. Decide where ball is likely to go. Organize and execute selected response (eg. dive to right to block the shot) Action possibilities of the environment/task in relation to the perceivers capabilities. Perception of the environment/task in terms of the actions the perceiver can potentially exert on it. Views the relationship between perception and action as circular. A direct relationship exists between perception and action. Reaction time (rt) brief time lag between (1) the moment when a stimulus is presented and (2) the initiation of the response. Influenced by: number of choices for response, levels of uncertainty, anticipation, foreperiod (waiting for stimulus) consistency, psychological refractory period, stimulus-response compatibility. The more choices you have the longer the response time. The biggest jump is from one choice to 2, and then at some point it levels off.
