KP221 – L9
Clinical: groin pull
Soas: anterior medial muscle - comes off vertebrae bodies (T12 - L1 - T5)
Crosses hip joint and attaches to lesser trochanter
Every joint in the low back and pelvis you have to look at soas
Soas is a hip flexor
Gluteus maximus and soas work opposite to each other
Soas has to relax to give power and soas will go into a contraction while running which
means it will tighten and the muscle will pull
Anterior Thigh Muscles (not quadriceps)
Psoas
Origin: side of T12-L5 vertebrae and their discs, TVPs of T12-L5 vertebrae
Insertion: lesser trochanter
Iliacus
Origin: iliac crest, iliac fossa, sacrum ala, anterior sacroiliac ligament
Insertion: tendon of psas major, lesser trochanter and femur distal to lesser trochanter
Action of psoas and iliacus
They work together
Flex and stabilize hip joint
Postural - controls trunk and involves movement when standing
Pectineus
Origin: superior ramus of pubis
Insertion: pectineal line of femur
Action: adducts with medial rotation of hip
Sartorius
Origin: ASIS
Insertion: superior part of medial aspect of tibia
Action: tailor muscles, hip flexion, abduction and lateral rotation
Patterns:
All supplied by the femoral nerve except for psoas which is supplied by the anterior rami
of L1-L12 and L3
Pectineus sometimes has additional supply from the obturator nerve
Blood supply: all are supplied by the femoral artery
Adductor Group - Adductor Brevis
Origin: body and inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion: pectineal line *, proximal linea aspera
Adductor longus

Gluteus maximus and soas work opposite to each other. Soas has to relax to give power and soas will go into a contraction while running which means it will tighten and the muscle will pull. Origin: side of t12-l5 vertebrae and their discs, tvps of t12-l5 vertebrae. Origin: iliac crest, iliac fossa, sacrum ala, anterior sacroiliac ligament. Insertion: tendon of psas major, lesser trochanter and femur distal to lesser trochanter. Postural - controls trunk and involves movement when standing. Insertion: superior part of medial aspect of tibia. Action: tailor muscles, hip flexion, abduction and lateral rotation. All supplied by the femoral nerve except for psoas which is supplied by the anterior rami of l1-l12 and l3.
