KP231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: William Farr, John Graunt, Circulatory Collapse
Document Summary
Kp231 lecture topic 8: study of the distribution and determinants of disease frequency in human populations. Who: questions may consist of comparisons between, different populations at a given time, different subgroups, different periods of observation. Key assumptions of epidemiology: majority of hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) disease does(cid:374)(cid:859)t o(cid:272)(cid:272)ur at ra(cid:374)do(cid:373, causal and preventive factors of human disease that can be identified through investigation of different populations/subgroups of individuals within a population, quantitative science. Count: count of the number of persons in the group studied who have particular disease or characteristics, how many people smoke, drink, etc, ex. Ratio: an expression of a relationship between 2 numbers, ex. 100 males : 150 females 1 males : 1. 5 females 0. 66 males : 1 females. Proportion: special type of ratio, numerator is part of the denominator and resulting proportion is expressed as percentage, using last example (100/250) x 100, multiplied by bigger number depending on population size.
