Quotations can take over and let other people speak instead of you. Quotations show only that you can transfer data. Summary and paraphrase show you can assimilate other peoples work on your own. They let you foreground your own ideas, your interpretation and your voice. Identify the main points in the text. Expect the summary to be much shorter than the original. Using quotations shows that the student recognizes key or controversial points and recognizes writing that is worthy of being passed on and credited. Quotes also defend the accuracy of the paper in cases where the writer wishes to prove that someone really did make a certain claim. Paraphrasing shows that the student really digested the information read. Students sometimes choose to quote material that they don"t fully understand. Paraphrasing lets the writer keep his or her own voice. Should enhance a paper, not take it over.
