SES and Health:
Includes income, occupation, and education factors
Why not income? (don’t get to ask about finance, sex, weight)
Less stable over time
Age dependent
A sensitive topic: associated with higher refusal rates
Poorer health can lead to reduced income
1. Which can lead to further compromised health
2. Difficult is isolate a clear casual path
Some data:
As income increases, health increases (improvements)
The higher education the better the health in all age categories
Health declines with age but the same relationships do exist (higher education)
Lowest SES (lower bottom) Higher SES (higher income, better education)
Low health status high health status (more education, higher income, and better
occupation)
Note... triangle does not represent distinct difference between high and low SES
Triangle shape indicated proportion of population at different levels
Health indicators Related to SES: Trends
Children:
Decreased SES: children are disadvantaged from their peers
More babies that are born premature and of low birth weight (increased of risk
disabilities and respiratory disease)
Higher risk of injury (low SES = living in unsafe environments, both parents working)
Higher risk of disease
Engaged in riskier behaviours
Develop psychosocial/emotional problems
Delayed vocabulary development
Engage in criminal activity
Increased in school drop outs or not working
Disadvantaged may persist into adulthood (even if SES improves)
Must be noted that income does not necessarily determine a variety of other factors
Adulthood:
Decreases SES:
Decreased life expectancy
Higher SES have higher life expectancy (women)
Aboriginals have lower life expectancy
Perceived health: good/excellent: SES
Perceived mental health: low SES = less likely to report
Stroke
