KP231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Eustress, Health System
KP231 – L11
What is it about SES that triggers the pathway?
Relationship: Health & SES
oWhy do they impact on health and SES
Access to Health Care System
oDifferential access
oNot one of the most important
All individuals become sick
Health care is accessible to all, still hierarchy exists
Health care system is accessible to all, triangle still exists
Stressors
oDistressors
oAs we move up hierarchy, less stress
oConsequences of prolonged distressors:
Increased blood pressure
Increased development of certain cancers
Increased overall exhaustion
Increased risk of CHD
Decreased immune system functioning
Increased susceptibility to colds (only know a few)
Why is there a relationship between SES and stress
People with decreased SES are more inclined:
to encounter undesirable life events
to live in environments with higher crime rates
to experience unemployment and marital instability
to be in less desirable jobs
to lack feelings of power and control
to experience feelings of low self-esteem
to have more distressors

Document Summary
Why do they impact on health and ses. Health care is accessible to all, still hierarchy exists. Health care system is accessible to all, triangle still exists. Increased susceptibility to colds (only know a few) Why is there a relationship between ses and stress. Individuals with low ses are less able to manage stressors because they don"t have adequate resources. Better genetics does not mean better ses. Some illnesses strictly genetic regardless of environmental factors/exposure, disease will surface (i. e cystic fibrosis) In other cases, genetics predispose people to certain diseases and disorders however, environmental intervention/factors may have an effect more specifically, determine who will become ill. Persons with low ses may be more predisposed to and less able to combat diseases affected by environmental interventions or factors. Positive relationship between increased ses and positive lifestyle behaviours. Lifestyle factors: smoking, nutrition, physical activity, enjoyment, eustress, importance of play.
