Representation: the process by which thoughts are transformed into visual images. Condensation: the fusing together of different ideas or images into a single image. Displacement: in which a potentially disturbing image or idea is replaced by something connected but less disturbing. Symbolization: in which some neutral object stands for, or alludes to, some aspects of secual life which the dreamer would prefer not to recognize. Perversions vs. neuroses: freud believed the oedipus complex was universal, we can think of many situations that would complicate the narrative.
