Good film music brings to life the settings or character of film and cushions/masks the ordinary-ness of anticlimactic moments. Music can intensify inner thoughts and characters, lift mere dialogue into poetry, reaches out and envelopes all into one single experience. Effects of music in film: music can create an appropriate atmosphere. Ex: music will match the setting in terms of dancing, beat is in time with dancing. When on screen elements and music don"t match it feels wrong: indicates emotional state of characters. Depending on the mood of the music, we can see the emotional state of character on screen: can supply continuity among scenes and unifies scenes. Connects the end of one scene to the beginning of another: remind us of the past. The past in the film or outside the film depending on how its used. Ex: lotr shire music brings us to magical time when shire was pure and folky.
