Any number of devices, could be linked in a single system. Transmitted digitally at a rate of 31, 250 bits. Can transmit on up to 16 discrete channels. Uses an 8 bit resolution, so midi messages consist of a series of 8 bit bytes. Channel messages: there are to be sent on one channel to a unique device. System messages: they are received by all connected devices. Midi system for all receivers in the system. System exclusive messages allows manufacturers to build instruments that are fundamentally different in design. Channel messages: voice messages: carry musical performance data. Local control on or off, allows the device to be controlled by its own keyboard.
