MU265 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Secondary Chords, Mixolydian Mode, Subdominant
Document Summary
Means any chord diatonic to a key can be preceeded by its dominant. Tonisization (not modulating) is when you"re temporarily emphasizing a note out of the key, do it by preceeding it with its secondary dominant. Two most common targets are iv and v. Most common type of tonisization is over the dominant chord: (key of c) Key of c notes played over this will fit well as long as caution is used with the. Second most common type of tonisization is over the subdominant chord: (key of c) Even though we"re in key of c, this is not tonic functioning but dominant functioning. We want to preceed this with its secondary dominant. B/c the sound of the b flat in the c7 is so prevalent, we have to accomodate it in this chord. Any time the iv chord is preceeded by its dominant, it is tonisized and thus we have to play an ionian scale.
