NO105 Lecture 6: Week 2
Document Summary
Pocahontas and la malinche were perceived in contrasting ways. Pocahontas was labelled more positively, as a virginal figure representing americans while on the other hand, malinche was portrayed in a more promiscuous manner a(cid:374)d (cid:449)as k(cid:374)o(cid:449)(cid:374) as a (cid:449)o(cid:373)a(cid:374) (cid:449)ho (cid:862)(cid:271)etrayed(cid:863) her own culture. These views are perhaps due to the population/audience of the cities they lived in. Malinche lived in a large indigenous society whereas pocahontas was in small village with low indigenous density. Thus, the negative views of malinche were mostly portrayed by indigenous people who felt betrayed by her assistance in the colonization whereas pocahontas was in a predominately white society and was mostly portrayed by europeans. In the past, interracial relationships were greatly looked down upon as it mixed two different classes: civilized christians and primitive heathens. It seemed as though it would lower the (cid:862)hierar(cid:272)hy(cid:863) i(cid:374) a (cid:449)ay. Laws were passed to prevent interracial marriages however they were deemed ineffective.
