Internal (FINAL EXAM)
o In Plato’s dialoge Euthyphro, Socrates asks Euthyphro: “Is the pious loved by the gods
because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?”
In other words: is what is moral commanded by God because it is moral? Or is it
moral simply in virtue of being commanded by God?
God loves the good because they are good
The thing’s goodness is independent of God
God’s love makes that thing good – God can change the good
Ex. if God says murder is wrong, is that the only reason why it is wrong? What if
he said murder was right?
God’s nature is the good – essential part of God to be good – he does not will
Why does God command it? If he says it is good, it is good
If such independent value exists, then it does not depend on God
If the good is independent of God, then God is not all powerfu
