Jan 22 2014 Biocentrism Cont.  Taylor, “biocentric outlook on nature” ­ Develops Schweitzer’s life­centered theory  ­ Humans are no more valuable than any other living thing  ­ Biocentric outlook on nature o Humans are members of the earths community of life  Humans have emerged as a species only recently  o The natural world is an organic system  Ecosystems o Each individual organism is conceived as a teleological center of life  Teleological = goal directed, acting for purposes  • Talk about all sorts of things have goals   Example: the metabolism of a fish involves taking material  from outside the fish and using it for the construction and  maintenance of cells   This is the goal or the purpose. Thus, a fish is a collection of  such processes, a teleological centre of life   1) objective knowledge of an organism 
