Gender and politics: test 2 in 3 weeks (march 26): covers weeks 7-10. Sex: describes bio differences, determines sex, relatively fixed characteristics. Patriarchy: rule by men and/or rule in interest of men, gives power and authority to men as heads of households, leaders of commerce, members of political elite, community leaders, leaders of organized religions, etc. Biological determinism: belief that individual"s nature and all of their possibilities are determined by biology, closely related to patriarchy, often seen as fixed norms. 1st wave feminism: dominant from mid 1800s to early 1900s. Demands expanded to property rights, access to education (women and girls in secondary education) and recognition as "persons" under the law. Largely associated with variety of feminist thought known as liberal feminism. Focused on gender equalities (especially in workplace) combatting restrictive gender roles (in both public and private realm), reproductive rights (bc), addressing differential impact of policies on men and women: pay equity, employment equity, affirmative action.
