PO301 Lecture 4: Po301 les 4
Document Summary
Idea that minority cultures should be given special recognition in the design of legislatures, and the formulation of law and policy. Public recognition and self-respect; the idea that a person"s identity is forged through dialogue with other people; due recognition and appropriate valuing of a person"s identity is required for them to achieve adequate levels of self-respect and self-esteem. In practice this might require public acknowledgement such as different languages on signs, or also group-differentiated rights and laws, eg reserving seats in legislature, this sort of thing maybe more important to secure public esteem of previously persecuted groups. Fairness and group-differentiated laws; (parekh) laws may impact differently or unequally on members of different cultural groups. Equal treatment or fairness may require that members of a cultural group be exempted from a law when it places additional burdens on them, or that it be interpreted in a culturally sensitive manner, such as sikhs and crash-helmets/crash-turbans.
