Document Summary

The normative study of the relation between the individual and the state. Both what we owe to the state and what the state owes us. Political science is only descriptive, whereas this is normative. Ex. what is the best kind of state? what duties does the state have? the way the state ought to be. Leviathan historically is a monster from the sea made up of humans, suggesting that authority of sovereign depends on the will of the people. Military power is thanks to the people. The aim is for a well-ordered state. Mind is meant to be sovereign of the body. Others may say that a stable and growing economy or military indicates legitimacy. There are multiple ways to establish it, and gov"s will be overthrown if it is not viewed as legitimate: concord and sedition (hobbe"s terms) -> correspond, respectively, to health and sickness [in the body politic].
