Document Summary

Pp111 lecture #1 september 16th 2015: theories of knowledge: epistemology . Perception, testimony: theories of reality: metaphysics . What is philosophy: what philosophy is not: In the practice of philosophy, no idea is immune to critical scrutiny. Every question is meant to be challenged. Good questions are as valuable as good answers. It is not the psychology/sociology of belief. Philosophers attempt to provide justifications for beliefs, not explanations of them. We can explain why someone believes a certain thing without necessarily holding that belief ourself: eg. i believe that spiderman is in the wlu library. Explination: i have taken a hallucinogenic drug: this is not relevant to whether my belief is true, when others know the explanation of me belief, it does not give them any reason to share my belief. What is philosophy: philosophy is love ( philos ) of wisdom ( sophia )
