Turing: turing"s view can be characterized as a functionalist view of the mind. Weak artificial intelligence: when the process is followed, but not understood. Functionalist view of the mind: anything that functions in the same way as the mind is the same in intelligence. The systems reply: searle is right that the person in the room does not understand chinese, but the whole system of which he is a part does understand chinese. Searle"s response to the systems reply: let the individual internalize all of these elements of the system he does all the calculations in his head. The individual then incorporates the entire system we can even get rid of the room and suppose he works outdoors. All the same, he understands nothing of chinese. (89-90)
