PP111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Socratic Method
Document Summary
The distinction between good and bad opinions has nothing to do with whose opinions they are. Why it is so hard to deine what philosophy is . First, that philosophers will take almost any opportunity to disagree, argue, and debate. Secondly, that there is nothing - or almost nothing - that is not up for question and debate in philosophy. Even the nature of philosophy itself is fair game for philosophers to study and philosophize about. Thirdly, if you want to know what philosophy is, you must be prepared to philosophize. Socrates, as you will see from the readings and the video, claims to know only one thing: he knows that he doesn"t know anything. Role of modern day political philosopher identify the assumptions that inform out lives, and then subjecting those assumptions to critical relection. Issues such as abortion, euthanasia, war, etc. are ight by very passionate people but not argued well: arguing why an issue is important.
