Legal norm: legal standard, the way one ought to behave. 4 criteria: rule can only be law if it"s moral, serves for the common good, made by one who has authority over community (rightly appointed, not a tyrant, must be published (so people know it) Eternal law: the whole community of the universe is governed by devine reason. Wherefore the very idea of the universe, has the nature of law. It consists of those legal principals that are discernible through reason alone. Fundamental principle of natural law: that good is to be pursued, and even is to be avoided. Aquinas response: animal instincts guide them to behave in accordance with eternal law, and none living things are subject to other natural laws such as the laws of physics/chemistry/etc.
