Document Summary

Foucault thought that a part of it is that we"ve been convinced that truth revealed by confession liberates it eases our guilt and the burdens of secrecy. He sees a continuation of the theme of confession from the christian confession to its modern forms (social media and therapists). A large part of the christian confession was the confession of sexual sins. We see this again in freud"s emphasis on sexuality in his therapeutic techniques. What he means by confession in modern times isn"t literal confession, but the general discourse we have around sex. Foucault claims that those who believe that confession frees us have ignored the power relations implied by the idea of truth. The repressive hypothesis suggests that sex has been repressed in our history, and moved underground. Foucault thinks that this in itself has had a power and influence over us, it makes talking about sex a liberating experience.
