Document Summary

An action is free when it meets the compatibilist analysis : we have the power or ability to perform the action if we want to, the action is unconstrained and unimpeded (not stopped) Compatibilists claim freedom and determinism and compatible (can occur at the same time) Clarify the meaning of free and unfree choices and actions. Determinism is not a constraint or an impediment (to the classical compatibilist) The compatibilist analysis and the ability to do otherwise. Free action versus free will (brave new world and walden two) If what we desire is determined, then we have no free will. Freedom of will = freedom of choice which is just a matter of the compatibilist analysis. Choosing to do x is free if it is free from constraints/impediments and if you have the power or ability to choose to do x (compatibilists haven"t yet explained how free will and determinism can occur simultaneously)
