Document Summary

Ps101 - lecture 5 - the brain part 2. Midbrain - reticular formation (*textbook says hindbrain; can be in either) (relay system between old and new brain) Forebrain - subcortical and cortex (cerebral hemispheres) (new; higher level; pretty much all of your thinking happens here) Controls vital bodily functions such as heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure, circulation. Assists in control of movement (swallowing, breathing, eyes, facial expressions) Locus coeruleus - long axon, norepinephrine, attention/arousal. Example of transected (only has the hindbrain) cat. Reticular formation regulates attention and alertness (sleep and arousal) Contains neural centers that control some motor reactions/movement. Relay system for all sensory information (except smell) Regulation of basic biological needs (fighting, fleeing, feeding, mating) Covers the cerebral hemispheres; primarily responsible for higher mental processes (language, memory, thinking) Summit (high/final point in our intelligence; all science, math, problem solving, etc) Composed of two cerebral hemispheres: left and right. Look like mirror images of each other.
