PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Alpha Wave, Vaginal Lubrication, Delta Wave
Document Summary
Are objective but cannot indicate what person is experiencing subjectively. Ex aware that someone is walking behind you; move to make room for them. Circadian rhythms regulated by suprachiasmatic nuclei (scn) Scn neurons link to pineal gland, which secretes melatonin. 24 hour clock (natural is actually a little bit longer than 24 hours); sleep/wake cycle. Neurons in the scn are active during daylight hours. Neurons in scn become inactive at night. Influence tendency to be a morning person or a night person . Affects ability to learn and ability to work. Circadian rhythms - promote readiness for sleep. Electrodes measure 4 types of brain wave activity: Alpha - relaxed (if there are alpha waves, you are awake but relaxed) Beta - active (if there are beta waves, you are awake) In alpha and beta you are awake and processing things. Cycle through stages roughly every 90 minutes. Beta waves occur when awake and alert (15-30 cps)
