PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Olfactory Bulb, Neurogenesis, Sept
… continued from sept 29
Hemispheres: Lateralization
● Specialization → left and right
● Left → language, mathematics, analytical, sequential
● Right → visual, spatial, holistic, hear language, creativity, intuition
Where does the signal come from and where does it go?
● Left hemisphere coordinates right side and vice versa
● Much of our primary functions are connected to the opposite side of the body
● Things happening on the left are processed by the right hemisphere of the brain
● Things happening on the right are processed by the left hemisphere
Left-Right Dominance
● Dominant hand tends to tell you what side of the brain is working harder
Special Language Centres
● Broca’s Area → Production of speech
● Wernicke’s Area → Comprehension of language
Plasticity
● Plasticity: the ability of the brain to reorganize and compensate from brain damage, a
change in function and structure
○ Reorganize
○ Repair
● Rehabilitation after brain injury
● Old view → once damaged, it is all over
○ Developmental literature - neurons in place prenatally
○ Proliferation versus Growth - key points developmentally
● New findings
○ Neurogenesis - hippocampus (Limbic System → learning and memory), olfactory
bulb
○ Neurogenesis not just replacement, could be repair
○ Flexibility in the system
○ Growth and development of nervous tissue, new cells
● Video clip of girl who had half of her brain removed
● Plasticity comes at different developmental period (2,11,13), harder after you become a
teenager → younger you are when you have a major brain injury = more successful
recovery

Document Summary
Right visual, spatial, holistic, (cid:3247)hear(cid:3248) language, creativity, intuition. Left hemisphere coordinates right side and vice versa. Much of our primary functions are connected to the opposite side of the body. Things happening on the left are processed by the right hemisphere of the brain. Things happening on the right are processed by the left hemisphere. Dominant hand tends to tell you what side of the brain is working harder. Plasticity: the ability of the brain to reorganize and compensate from brain damage, a change in function and structure. Old view once damaged, it is all over. Developmental literature - neurons in place prenatally. Proliferation versus growth - key points developmentally. Neurogenesis - hippocampus (limbic system learning and memory), olfactory bulb. Neurogenesis not just replacement, could be repair. Growth and development of nervous tissue, new cells. Video clip of girl who had half of her brain removed.
