PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Electroconvulsive Therapy, Aversion Therapy, Systematic Desensitization
Document Summary
Assumes you have maladaptive behaviour which are learned and can be unlearned (ex: Flooding is real-life stimuli, implosion is imagined scenes, both are based on cc to develop systematic desensitization (eliminating anxiety through counterconditioning). It involves relaxation & work through stimulus hierarchy (at the top is the greatest fear) Aversion therapy is a cr to a cs (food aversions are most common). Operant conditioning is used w positive reinforcers or punishers to increase/reduce behaviour. This is successful when traditional therapies are difficult (ex: extremely defiant children) . Uses token economy (ex: stickers given to work towards exchange for tangible reinforcers such as library time/reading alone) Modelling and social learning is learning skills through observation. This uses drugs, electroconvulsive therapy & psychosurgery to bring symptoms under control, however overcoming challenges is still on the client. Drug classes aim to hit neurotransmitters and affect when they are available, ensure they are crossing the synaptic cleft, and ensure reuptake can occur.
