Freud"s theory very controversial proposed following processes: Whatever you are aware of at any given moment. Events out of awareness but that can be recalled (like long-term memory) don"t remember it right now but if somebody mentioned it, you"d remember. Considered by freud to be the primary motivating force of behaviour. Contains repressed memories, instincts and wishes that have never been allowed into consciousness. Eg. latent part of dreams: repressed desires are part of the unconscious. What really makes you who you really are (bottom half of the iceberg) things you are not aware of but define who you are. Id wants to drive over the speed limit, it doesn"t care about the rules, it wants to go fast and it does what it wants to do. Ego well let"s go 55 because it"s not too slow but it"s pretty fast, it"s just slow enough that we can stop if someone jumps out on the road .
