PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Standard Deviation, Naturalistic Observation, Central Tendency
Document Summary
Within-subjects design (participants serve as their own control group) Rather than 2 groups, the participant is measured twice (at least)- iv & absence. Interaction between ivs on dv (when the e ect of one iv on the dv depends on the other iv) The e ect of pet ownership on bp depends on whether the pet is healthy. Ex) observing pet walkers vs. non pet walkers. Surveys (gathering information about aspects of behavior using questionnaires, interviews) Using statistics in research; accurate conclusions: descriptive statistics (organize/summarize but can"t predict) Numeric measures of central tendency- on average what does the data look like. Mean (average) (sum/# of ppl in sample) sensitive to extreme scores. Median (score that falls in the middle of the distribution: put scores in middle, middle is the point where there are as many above as below, provides the best index of central tendency. Numeric measures of variability (how far spread apart the scores are from the mean)
