Document Summary

Motivation: a process that influences the direction, persistence, and vigour of goal-directed behaviour. Argues that instincts motivate much of our behaviour. Heredity partly accounts for motivational differences among people. Adaptive significance- people are motivated to engage in behaviours that promotes survival advantages. Internal physiological equilibrium that the body strives to maintain. Requires sensory mechanism, response system, and control center. Physiological disruptions to homeostasis produce drives to behave in a certain way(eg: thirst influences drinking) Stimuli that "pull" an organism toward a goal (eg: good grades, food) Says behaviour is determined by the strength of the expectation that behaviour will lead to a goal and the incentive value placed on that goal. Extrinsic motivation: performing an activity to obtain an external reward or to avoid punishment. Intrinsic motivation: performing an activity for its own sake. Physiology of hunger: homeostatic mechanisms help regulate eating, eating not necessarily linked to immediate energy needs.
