Document Summary

Motivation: an internal state or condition that directs behaviour: usually towards a goal. Motivation: internal state that initiates, directs, and sustains behaviour. Motives are needs or desires: varies in strength and duration, maslow(cid:495)s hierarchy of needs. Drives: when motives are internal, they push us to act. Incentive: when motives are external (outside of us), they pull/entice us to act. Instincts: inborn behavioural tendencies, activated by stimuli in our environments. Primary drives: instinct + drive reduction theories: hunger, thirst, unlearned motives to satisfy biological needs. Secondary drives: drive reduction theory: need for achievement, need for affiliation, develop through learning and experience. Homeostasis: tendency of the body to maintain itself in a state of balance or equilibrium. Maintains that motivation comes from a need to achieve an appropriate level of arousal. Yerkes-dodson law: states that ideal performance on a task occurs when the arousal level is optimized to the difficulty level of the task.
