PS102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gestalt Psychology, Retina, Olfaction
Document Summary
Proximity: elements that are close together belong together. Continuity: elements linked to form a continuous line. Perceptual constancies: refers to our ability to see objects as appearing a constant colour, size, shape, despite continual changes in our perspective. We see a consistent colour in changing illumination conditions. Ie. cube with blue and yellow dots. We see a consistent brightness in changing shadow conditions. Ie. checkerboard with teal cylinder and shading. We see a constant shape in object despite receiving di ernt sensory images of the shape. We see objects as having a constant size, despite changes the sensory input with variations in distance. Image on the retina is 2d but we live in a 3d world. How do we perceive depth from a 2d image. Monocular cues: depth can be perceived with one eye. Binocular cues: depth perceived with two eyes. We can detect changes in the shape of our lens as a cue to distance.
