Document Summary

Hm was 27 year old in 1953 when he bad most of hi hippocampus and surrounding brain tissue removed. Operations successful, but he could no longer form new memories. Hm is able to learn and perform new tasks. Yet no memory of doing the task. Memory: processes that allow us to record and retrieve experiences and information. Three behaviours shows that memory is functioning. Recognition: identify which stimulusm out of a bunch of choices, matches you stored information. Relearning: compare rates of learning information on successive occasions to the. Encoding: getting information in by translating it into a neural code that your brain can process. Retrieval: getting information back out of storage when we want to use it. More in stm than rehearsal, so now called working memory. Working memory: stores information actively processes it, supports problem solving and planning. Automatic processing : when some information goes straight from sensory. Information picked up by our sense and enters sensory memory.
