Psychology moved from looking at behaviour to looking at how people think (cognition) Memory is required for most higher-order functions: language, problem solving, reading, math, we will highlight. You need memory for cognitive ability and every day activities. Vulnerability (our memory system is very vulnerable: our memory system is a tremendous and powerful system, despite idiosyncrasies. A model of memory: three processes. Encoding: acquiring information, detect the information (the code). You will not have a memory event unless you realize that the information needs to be remembered. The brain needs to be prepared to be placed in memory. Sometimes your brain codes the wrong piece of information.
