PS102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Amnesia, Occipital Lobe, Long-Term Memory
Document Summary
System by which we retain info and bring it to mind. A method of retaining info and skills we acquire through experiences: encoding converting info into a form usable in memory. Transformation of info from one form to another (neural code) This code can be pattern, sound, letter sequence, image ect. Paying attention to incoming info: storage retaining information in memory. Retention of encoded info over time memory trace. Can last from fractions of a second (sensory memory) to several seconds (short/working memory) to indefinitely (long term: retrieval bringing stored info to mind. Recovery of stored info when needed: recall, recognition, interference, stress. Sensory memory: hold large amount of incoming info for a very short period of time. Iconic stores: visual info lasts fractions of a second. Echoic stores: auditory info lasts about 2 seconds. Lasts 20 seconds or up to 30 seconds. Errors often phonetic confuse letters that sound alike. Declarative (explicit): can be verbalized, factual knowledge.
