PS102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Ontario Highway 401, Deindividuation, Groupthink
Document Summary
The dark side: can be ill-natured. E. g. when you hit someone and they hit you back: babylonian hammurabi"s code. Pluralistic ignorance: you know you have to help but notice no one else helps, so you don"t help because you don"t want to be the odd one out, no one believes, but everyone thinks that everyone believes". Diffusion of responsibility: if there are more people in the situation, then everyone will think that someone else will help. E. g. people are more likely to help someone who"s care broke down in a rural area rather than on highway 401. Social influence presence of others impacts on us. Groupthink: a type of flawed decision-making in which a group does not question its decisions critically to maintain group cohesion, likely in cohesive groups with high morale and members already share similar attitudes. Social loafing: reduced motivation and effort by individuals who work in a group as opposed to work alone.
