Social cogniion: is what we use to interpret and understand social events, difers from other cogniive acts because of the social content. What do we learn from others: we use language to communicate feelings and social informaion to others, pass social informaion along through generaions. Why others afect us: people provide us with informaion about ourselves, social comparison theory (fesinger, 1954) Evaluate our abiliies and beliefs by comparing them with those of others. Some say our noion of what is real physical reality is a construcion of social knowledge. Conformity (aka going along to get along: tendency of people to change their behaviour as a result of group pressure. Solomon asch conformity experiment: group conformity; four actors and one paricipant, see if gives the right answer or conforms to the group. Group of size (larger group, increased conformity) Individuals with low self-esteem are especially prone to conformity. Asians are more likely to conform than north americans.
