Document Summary

Motivation determines stimuli that evoke emotions increase salience, promote action . All of the processes that initiate, direct, and sustain behaviour. Motives are needs or desires that direct or energize our behaviour: maslow"s hierarchy of needs. When we have needs, we are motivated to satisfy them. When motives are internal (they push us to act) they are drives : drives internal state of tension that motivates to do stuff that will reduce this tension. When motives are external (they pull us to act) they are incentives : incentives external goal that has the capacity to motivate behaviour. Primary drives: stem from unlearned motives to satisfy biological needs. Secondary drives: develop through learning and experience. List of things that govern human behaviour: madsen list of biological needs, murray list of social needs. When you satisfy the drive (e. g. , by eating), you experience a drive-reduction because you no longer feel the drive. Autonomic nervous system: control the compensatory mechanisms.
