We have a need to belong, to be in relationships that provide ongoing positive feedback. With this need to belong comes the effects of blocking it. Called ostracizing, if this happens people become anxious, depressed, hurt and withdrawl. Proximity of functional distance, highly predicts liking. Along with geographical distance, comes functional distance, which is how likely you are to cross paths. Love is dependent on just seeing each other. Anticipating to see someone will also boost liking. Expecting to date someone will also boost liking. Mere exposure effect, tendency of novel stimuli to be rated higher after repeated exposure. In speed dating it is proved, also in elections better looking more likely to get nominated. Matching phenomenon, we tend to choose partners that match us in categories, whether that be looks or something else. We tend to rate people who are more physically attractive as having more positive characteristics, this is the physical attractiveness stereotype.
